Laboratory

Private blood tests, anywhere in the UK

With London Medical Laboratory. You order in our app, wherever you live, and give your sample close to home — a kit by post, a collection point found from your postcode, or someone who comes to you. You do not need a referral, and you do not need to be a patient of ours.

Each test's markers, turnaround and price are in the app, once you have an account.

Which blood test is right for you?

Most people arrive for one of three reasons.

Something is not right

Tiredness that does not pass, a symptom you keep explaining away. A blood test is one of the most direct ways of finding out what is behind it.

You are following something

Living with a condition, or watching a number your doctor asked you to watch. Measuring at your own pace, between appointments, is how you see it move.

You want to go further

Training for something, or simply wanting to know where you stand before deciding what to change. This is the part of your health that is not waiting for a complaint.

How it works

From choosing a test to holding the result.

  1. 1

    Choose your test

Browse the tests and see exactly which markers each one measures and how long the result takes. You do not need a referral, and you do not need to be a patient of anyone.

  2. 2

    Give your sample

This is the part that changes from test to test — the three ways are below.

  3. 3

    Get your result

The laboratory sends the result and it appears in your area. It is yours: keep it, download it, or send it to whichever doctor you prefer.

Three ways to give your sample

Which one applies depends on the test — each test page says so before you pay.

A kit at home

A finger-prick kit arrives by post, with prepaid postage both ways. You follow the steps in the app and post it back the same day; from the postbox it travels by overnight courier.

A collection point near you

Some tests need a full blood draw, which a professional has to take. You book a time at one of the laboratory's collection points — many are inside pharmacies — and it takes a few minutes.

Someone comes to you

For some tests a phlebotomist can visit your home instead.

The network covers towns and cities across the UK, and many points are inside pharmacies. The app searches from a postcode — yours, or wherever suits you that day — and shows what is nearest, how far it is and the station beside it. When a test of yours needs a point, you choose it inside the order itself.

What the home kit is like

Most tests are done this way, and most people have never done one. Here is what it involves.

  1. The kit arrives

A small box through the letterbox, with everything inside and the return postage already paid.

  2. A prick on the finger

A single-use lancet, on the side of a fingertip. It is the same kind of prick used to check blood sugar.

  3. A few drops in the tube

Drop by drop, up to the line. The tube is small — this is not a syringe of blood.

  4. Back in the post

Sealed, into the prepaid envelope, and into a postbox the same day. From there it travels by overnight courier.

This is the shape of it, not the instructions. Some kits also ask for a swab or a urine sample — the kit says which. Each one comes with the laboratory's own leaflet for that test, and the app walks you through it step by step.

A test for someone you care for

You can order a test for a parent or a child you look after. The test goes out in their name, and the result belongs to them.

Some tests have a minimum age; each test's page says so.

Who is responsible for what

The laboratory runs the test and issues the result — the test, the sample and the result are theirs — and a doctor of theirs writes the report that comes with it. What we do is give you access to private testing without a referral, and a place to keep the result.

A result is not a diagnosis. Nobody here reads it before you do, and ordering a test is not linked to any treatment. Send it to the doctor of your choice — and if anything about it worries you, speak to a doctor.
